Buddhists celebrate the Day of Vesak to commemorate the Lord Buddhas birth, enlightenment, and nirvana, all of which occurred on the same day but in different years. Since 1999, the United Nations has recognized the Day of Vesak as a United Nations International Day, as Buddhist teachings have contributed to the spirituality of humanity, particularly the use of kindness and tolerance as tools for achieving peace in society. The most essential practice is to uphold Buddhist teachings as guidelines for a useful life as an individual and a member in society.
