(29/05/2007) The Most Venerable Professor Dr. Phra Dharmakosajarn, Rector of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University and Chairman of the International Organizing Committee for the United Nations Day of Vesak Celebrations, cited bad governance and the abuse of power by those at the decision-making level as a cause of the Asian economic crisis 10 years ago.
Speaking at a press briefing on May 28, Phra Dharmakosajarn stressed the need for Buddhist leaders to pool their wisdom to give guidelines and principles to the people involved. The objective is to establish and achieve good governance, which is linked to sustainable development.
For this reason, the theme of the Fourth International Buddhist Conference focuses on “Buddhist Contribution to Good Governance and Development.”
Phra Dharmakosajarn also said that the concept of good governance is related to His Majesty the King of Thailand, whose achievements in the fields of good governance and development were evident. In his coronation more than 60 years ago, His Majesty pronounced the traditional Oath of Accession “We will reign with righteousness for the benefit and happiness of the Siamese people.”
In this context, Phra Dharmakosajarn said that “righteousness” could be interpreted as “good governance.” Throughout his reign, His Majesty has kept his promise; he has worked very hard for the betterment of his people. He was also presented with the first UNDP Human Development Lifetime Achievement Award last year in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to human development.
