The Most Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh, the world-renowned Vietnamese Zen master, has cited the power of mindfulness, wisdom, and compassion as a way to help in the survival of the world.
The Most Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh gave a keynote address “Buddhist Contribution to Good Governance and Development” on May 28 at 10:10 a.m. at ESCAP Hall, the United Nations Conference Center in Bangkok, one of the venues for the ongoing Fourth International Buddhist Conference.
In his address to the gathering of Buddhist leaders and scholars, the Most Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh urged people to be mindful in leading their lives and to handle suffering and transform their anger and hatred. Through mindful breathing, people can relieve the tensions of their bodies and minds, thus bringing about spiritual power and happiness.
The Most Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh pointed out that wisdom would make people have less suffering and enable them to get rid of anger and hatred. He also called on people to cultivate loving-kindness in order to protect the world and all lives in this planet. In his view, terrorism comes from wrong perceptions towards other people and countries, so they should be rectified to avoid conflicts and violence in the world.
