The Venerable Visuddhisamvara Thera, generally known as Ajahn Brahamavamso, abbot of Bodhinyana Monastery in Perth, Australia, has stressed that good government and corporate leaders alike must listen to the people, or their subordinates, and consider their complaints.
He made a keynote address on the Buddhist Contribution to Good Governance on May 27 at the Fourth International Buddhist Conference, being held at the United Nations Conference Center in Bangkok.
The Venerable Visuddhisamvara Thera gave a summary of his keynote address at a press briefing yesterday (May 27). He talked about model leaders, saying that a successful leader is one who inspires others to action by example, with authority, and through compassion. The ideal form of governance in Buddhism would have leaders embracing self-sacrifice, and not self-interest. He said that leaders need to have feedback from the people; they have to find solutions and must take criticism as well.
Kind leadership requires non-violence and the use of good governance guided by Buddhist principles, which emphasize harmony and peace.He pointed out that violence never solves problems. The unrest problem in the southern border provinces of Thailand could be tackled through education.
The Most Venerable Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh from the Plum Village in France will talk about the topic Buddhist Contribution to Good Governance and Development.
